The island’s history dates back to over 4000 years ago. Closely linked with the eminent and pre-classical ancient world, the island’s oldest inhabitants enjoyed a culturally lively existence, building sophisticated settlements that can still be admired at the Akrotiri archaeological site in the southern part of the island, easily reachable from our hotel.
The incredible site of Akrotiri remained impressively preserved following the volcanic eruption because the ash that covered it and solidified on the structures served as an archaeological time-capsule. Take a detailed look at the Minoan pottery and look at the cobblestone streets that run under Akrotiri’s ancient houses, imagining them bustling with life millennia ago.
The modern and beautiful Archaeological Museum of Thira located at the capital of the island, Fira, offers you the chance to discover yet more magnificent ancient treasures unearthed on the island, each telling its own cultural and anthropological story.
If you enjoy hiking, we can help you organize a walk to the mountaintop of ancient Thira in Kamari, where you can see ruins of the ancient city with a backdrop of stunning sea views.
